History of Eggnog

This delicious and nutritious concoction is an old American tradition of hospitality.

It is a traditional Christmas drink, first referred to in the early nineteenth century.

The first recorded eggnog recipe in America dated to 1775 called for rum, but its suggest that other spirits could be substituted.

Originally, however, the refreshment was made with ale instead of rum, as suggest the ‘nog’ part of its name, ‘nog’ being a archaic English word meaning strong ale.

The origin term eggnog is debated, it may be a contraction of egg and grog, o it may refer to the noggin, a wooden cup in which the egg based drink was served in colonial America.

Eggnog was a favorite holiday drink for both French and Americans. Of French origin, lait de poule was made of eggs, milk and spices.

When English speaking world discovered it, they added liquor and nutmeg can called it ‘nog’.
